What They Didn’t Tell You About the Birds & the Bees

Did you know we’re not making enough babies in the US to replace the population? Yes, it’s true! According to the National Center for Health Statistics, for every 1,000 women in the US, 1,765.5 babies were born in 2017 — we need 2,100 babies to be born annualy in order to keep the numbers up.

So, what’s the cause of this? The reasons could be endless. I actually did a quick Q&A with my readers to find out what they thought and here’s what they said —

- Waiting later to have children

- Too broke to have children

- Being on birth control too long

- Fertility issues or infertility

- Can’t figure out when ovulation actually happens

These are all valid reasons that could be to blame for the decline in US fertility rates. However, I’m going to focus on the nitty gritty of what goes into making a baby — and that’s timing.

I recently started using this nifty little device called the iFertracker. In addition to providing me with my true Basal Body Temperature (BBT), the app the device integrates with provides me with the insight to pinpoint where I am in my cycle — which is key when you’re trying to achieve (or even avoid) pregnancy. I say true BBT because the temperature women reference taking in the morning is actually their Waking Body Temperature...and completely different.

To be honest, I didn’t really understand my cycle until a few years ago. I always thought my cycle was 28 days — and my chemically induces cycles from birth control didn’t really help bust that myth. As it turns out, my cycle is somewhere around 25 days and I talk more about this in my unboxing video. The “around” in front of that number makes things a little difficult to plan for (or against) because that means ovulation doesn’t happen at the same time for me every month.

After using the iFertracker for just a week, I learned more about my cycle than I ever knew. It was so cool to watch my BBT change throughout that cycle — dropping right before ovulation and spiking back up as ovulation happened. It even gave me a friendly warning right before I ovulated AND again right before my period started. Both of these were greatly appreciated!

So, let’s talk about how easy it is to use this thing. I place it under my armpit right before bed and go to sleep — that’s it! While I’m sleeping, the iFertracker collects over 20,000 data points worth of information that results in the readings I wake up to every morning.

Upon waking, I take the device off and place it right next to my phone. At that point, it transmits the data from the night before to the app — telling me what my BBT is, where I am in my cycle, and what I can expect to happen next.

If you’re looking for an effortless and cost-effective way to track your cycles, consider the iFertracker! Visit them on the web and/or on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about their innovative technology.
