I am starting to feel like I have more to say about hair than anything else lately. I'm not a hair blogger but I've definitely been dabbling more in the hair area since it's obviously part of my lifestyle. Today's adventure brings me to our little one.
While I frequent the salon every two weeks, little heads are much more sensitive than grown heads. Little ones typically can't handle that degree activity as often, nor do they want to sit still for that long so I care for her hair here at home. I've trialed so many different products on her hair and I've gotten a vast range of results. Some have worked really well and others not so much.
I am on my way to being a born-again naturalista. I talk about my journey in You Don't Gotta Chop to Kick it Part 1 and Part 2. However, our little one has always been natural and the struggle has been real trying to figure out what works for her -- especially not having any true knowledge. I've deferred to amazing beauty/natural hair bloggers like @Naturally_Madisen and my good friend and soror @Naturally_Izzy to learn more about what may work best for her. The latest development is dry, itchy scalp. I have eczema and therefore, chronically dry skin that can sometimes affect my scalp. She has drier skin too and as of lately, her scalp seems to be affected as well. What I didn't realize until chatting with these two lovely ladies above is that a new product line I tried on her might actually be the culprit...which sucked because the line was not cheap.
After doing some research and of course looking at the reviews, I went with the recommendation to check out Design Essentials Scalp & Skin Care Detoxifying Tonic. The fact that this product contained natural ingredients like essential oils (eucalyptus, lemon, and peppermint) and witch hazel put me at ease when it came to her sensitive skin. The peppermint oil in particular soothed the itchiness right away and she loved the "cold" feeling, as she so eloquently put it LOL. In addition to that cooling sensation, the moisturizing properties offer a quick clean that can be used prior to washing or on it's own. We decided to use the product prior to washing.
The next product(s) I purchased as a follow up to the tonic was SheaMoisture's African Black Soap Dandruff Control Shampoo and Conditioner. I know SheaMoisture doesn't work for everyone but it works well for her. As soon as I wet her hair and applied this shampoo, my fingers started tingling. I knew this product had Tea Tree oil in it but I didn't expect to feel it that strongly -- which is a good thing by the way because I know she loves that feeling. Knowing this shampoo and conditioner has such soothing and moisturizing properties like aloe, willow bark extract, essential oils, and vitamins definitely helped with the decision to purchase this set.
Overall, I had no idea how long we would be battling this dryness and itchiness. I felt so bad about causing the problem that I was willing to do virtually anything to fix it. At this point, it seems like one round of these products has completely reversed what the previous product line (which is going in the trash by the way) did. However, I will continue to use these products together to maintain our progress. Her hair is back to being soft, very moisturized, and her twist outs even hold better (and longer). What was the icing on the cake? She loves the way these products maker her hair feel...and I can't ask for much more!
You can purchase these products from anywhere they're sold. I tend to go with Amazon* because sometimes I'm just too busy to make detours to the store sometimes -- plus, I'm not really a fan of crowds. I included some Amazon links below for the products I mentioned (along with the others I usually use on her) in case you want to check them out! I am in no means a hair blogger or specialist but these products worked for us and so I wanted to share them with you.
Have you ever gone with a new product line and it completely disrupted your flow? Tell me about it in the comments below and let me know what you used to reverse it!
